There is some confusion about the name. Angkor is officially the site and Angkor Wat the biggest temple. This time was different though, the scale of Angkor Thom (an area of 9 kilometers) is one of the most impressive in Cambodia. The name means Great City, an epithet as meaningful today as when it was first built in the 12 th century. Angkor Thom, once the focal point and political capital of the Khmer Empire, now anchored much of the monastic activity at Angkor and formed a secondary ritual area to Angkor Wat.
